CNN —More than 50,000 runners are set to descend on New York City on Sunday, transforming the city simultaneously into a stadium, carnival and an immense endurance test. Runners will take in all five boroughs of New York City on the 26.2 mile route. CNN —Armand Duplantis reached seventh heaven at the Diamond League Final on Sunday as he yet again broke the pole vault world record. Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay also broke the women’s 5,000-meter record with a time of 14 minutes, 0.21 seconds. Sweden’s Duplantis needed just one attempt at 6.23m – a centimeter higher than his own record set in France earlier this year. Duplantis clears 6.23m at Hayward Field -- the seventh time he has broken the world record. Tsegay’s effort means that the women’s 5000m record has now been lowered by nearly 11 seconds over the past three years.

The 27-year-old double world champion, who slapped his thighs and let out a loud whoop during the introductions, ran blind in the outside lane en route to a time of 47.57 seconds. WORLD RECORD ATTEMPTThe rain wreaked havoc with numerous events, particularly the much-anticipated men's pole vault featuring local hero Armand Duplantis. He then missed on three attempts at 6.23, which would have topped his world record of 6.22. With Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia breaking the steeplechase world record last month in Paris, there could be a thrilling battle between the African pair at the worlds in Hungary.

CNN —Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi was a surprise winner of the women’s New York City Marathon on Sunday, while Evans Chebet won the men’s race to complete a Kenyan double. There were challenging conditions for Sunday’s race as temperatures in New York City hovered around 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Farenheit). Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento led the field for much of the men’s race, but he collapsed to the floor and received medical attention in the final stages, handing Chebet the lead. It’s expected that 50,000 runners competed in this year’s NYC Marathon – the first full-capacity race since the Covid-19 pandemic. In the men’s race of the wheelchair division, Switzerland’s Marcel Hug claimed the fifth NYC Marathon title of his career in the men’s race.
